2w91 Ulaanbaatar 5 HD

I like this clip because it has some really interesting colours due to the sunset.  It’s also quite smooth, if a little fast, so I may try to stretch this one out a bit in After Effects.  Stability is good and there is minimum flicker, yet it does need to be trimmed at the beginning.  Overall, one of my favourites.

I’m fairly happy with this shot: it is stable and has minimum flicker, but I think it could do with being lightened a little.  The angle to the sun obviously gave it back light, and there is detail in the shadows, but I think it could would benefit from a slight adjustment.  The flow of the emissions is good, although maybe a little fast, so I’ll stretch this one out of the timeline in After Effects.  Overall, a good shot.

This was the first shot in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and didn’t turn out too bad.  I think the composition is okay, it is balanced and the emissions fill the space quite nicely, but I keep looking at it whilst considering the rule of thirds – everything on the ground fills the bottom third quite well, but the power cable isn’t on the top rule, so puts me off a little.  On reflection, it may have been better if I had crossed the road, but I think this may have tightened the shot too much.  I like the traffic in the foreground and I’m also keen on the plane in the top right hand corner @ 00:02.  I also like the tree that is almost central to the shot, and if I were able to do this again, I would ensure that it was in the centre of the frame.

This shot has some stability issues – I remember it was very windy at the time, and also sub-zero temperatures!  A small price I paid for art I guess.  The stability can be rectified in After Effects, so I’m not too worried about that.  The composition is okay, but could be cropped on the left side a little.  The sequence must also be trimmed at the beginning.  I do like the cyclist at the end of the shot.

I think this is quite an interesting short, but I’m not sure if it fits the rationale of my project.  My ethos is that public transport saves on emissions, but I’m not sure if this fits the project aesthetically.  The animation is good, although maybe a little short.  The exposure/ edit is acceptable and the stability is good.  It isn’t quite centralised though, and although many may not notice, it bugs me!  I like this sequence but may not use it in the final piece.

I do like this time-lapse, but I’m not so keen on the composition; I prefer that of Seoul Train 2 HD.  The exposure/edit is also a little dark but I like the length and busyness of the film.  Again, as stated in the reflective post for Seoul Train 2 HD, I’m not sure if this type of video lends itself well to the climate change and sustainability theme.

Love, love, LOVE this short!  If I had known at the time how good it was to come out, I would have done more studies from this angle.  Shot from the N Seoul Tower in Seoul, the cars look like ants, polluting the atmosphere as they go.  I think I’m going to try to get a better edit of this using After Effects, as I think I may be able to improve on the details in both the shadows and the highlights.  I think the composition is interesting, as it takes in the rule of thirds, but is also divided well on the diagonals.  Definitely one of my favourites from the project.  Also, at seven seconds, I think I can afford to drag this piece out to ten seconds.

Okay, so there’s some instability in this shot, but as always, this is easily fixed with motion tracking in After Effects.  I think this is quite a good shot, but maybe a little static, so I think it would benefit greatly from a pan-across, probably from left to right, also easily done with motion tracking in AE.  The colours are good and the clarity is acceptable.  The verticals look a bit off, but I think this is actually to do with the angle of the river; I’ve run rulers against the verticals and they actually seem to be fine.  One thing I do like about this one is the clover leaf animation in the top-middle of the shot.

Overall, this isn’t the greatest so far, but I’m hoping that it will become more exciting with motion tracking.

…or lack of it.  I’m finding it quite hard to engage with the internet at the moment (literaturely; although I’m quite sure it is not actually a word, I think it should be ;-) ), so to try and urge this interaction, I’m going to WRITE and POST…

There’s quite a lot of instability in this shot; easily fixed with After Effects.  I think this short has quite a lot to offer though, as it is quite busy.  A pan across the shot would be nice, or maybe a zoom-in (or out).  Nice details for me are the lifts on the tower on the top crash point (rule of thirds crash point ;-) ) and the boats moving along the river.  Although a little bit shoddy at the moment, I’m hoping this one can be brought up-to-scratch in post production.
